Cori Bush is under investigation by the Justice

 

Cori Bush is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Missouri since 2021. She is part of the "Squad", a group of progressive women in Congress. She is the first Black woman to represent Missouri in Congress, after defeating incumbent Lacy Clay who held the seat for ten terms in 2020.

According to media reports, Cori Bush is under investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly misusing federal funds for personal security. The Justice Department has subpoenaed the House Sergeant at Arms, the top law enforcement official in the House, to obtain records related to the alleged spending¹²³. Cori Bush has not publicly commented on the investigation yet. She said in a statement that she is fully cooperating with the probe.

Cori Bush explained that she needed security because of the threats she faced as a Black woman and an activist. She said she received death, rape, and kidnapping threats from some people who opposed her political views. She added that she considered personal security essential to protect herself, her family, and her staff.

Cori Bush is one of the most progressive members of Congress, and supports issues such as defunding the police, Medicare for All, and environmental justice. She became famous for her role in the protests against the killing of Michael Brown, a Black teenager who was shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. She managed to turn her social activism into a successful political campaign.

Cori Bush faces criticism from some Republicans and Democrats who think she spends excessively on personal security, while calling for cutting the police budget. Some of them have accused her of hypocrisy and exploitation. The investigation is expected to last for several months before the Justice Department issues its decision on whether Cori Bush violated the law or not.
