The forecast for Thanksgiving week and the following weekend highlights a possible significant weather event across the U.S.:
- Temperature Outlook: A broad area of low pressure will bring the season's most notable cold air outbreak, particularly affecting the Northern Plains with a 40 to 60 percent chance of temperatures dipping below -10 degrees F. This cold is expected to move south and east, potentially causing the first freeze in the South.
- Wind and Cold: There's a 20 to 40 percent chance of hazardous high winds which, combined with the cold, could lead to dangerously low wind chill temperatures. This is especially relevant for the Northern Plains and much of the East during the post-Thanksgiving travel period.
- Snowfall: A 20 to 40 percent chance of heavy snow is anticipated across the Great Lakes and Interior Northeast from the day after Thanksgiving into the holiday weekend, suggesting potential travel disruptions due to wintry conditions.
Overall, this weather system could significantly impact travel and daily life, especially with the combination of cold, wind, and snow across various regions.
