Stephen Miller Emerges as Top Contender for Trump's National Security Advisor: A Deep Dive into the Implications

May 2, 2025 – By Elouanes Soualili*

In a significant political development, Stephen Miller, President Donald Trump's top policy adviser and deputy chief of staff, is emerging as a leading candidate to become the next National Security Advisor, according to a report from *Axios* ([Axios, 2025](https://www.axios.com/2025/05/02/stephen-miller-national-security-adviser-candidate.

This shift follows the removal of Mike Waltz after the controversial “SignalGate” scandal, which involved the accidental leak of sensitive military data via an unsecured chat group on Signal

Who Is Stephen Miller?

Stephen Miller has long been one of Trump’s most trusted advisers. During the first term, he was the architect behind several hardline immigration policies, including the widely criticized “zero tolerance” policy that led to family separations at the U.S.-Mexico border. He also helped draft the travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries

Miller is currently serving as the White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Advisor, positions that give him proximity to both the president and matters of national defense.

Why the Vacancy?

The position became vacant after Mike Waltz was dismissed amid the SignalGate scandal, which saw a journalist accidentally added to a private group chat containing operational details about a U.S. strike in Yemen. The breach raised serious concerns about operational security and ultimately led to Waltz’s departure

Currently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is filling the role of acting National Security Advisor

 What Miller’s Appointment Could Mean

Miller’s potential appointment may signal a shift toward a more ideologically driven national security strategy. Observers expect:

Stricter Border Policies Framed as Security Issues

Reduced Emphasis on Multilateral Diplomacy

Increased Executive Power in National Defense

His critics warn that such approaches could further isolate the U.S. on the global stage and intensify domestic polarization.

Reactions and Analysis

Public opinion is divided. Supporters view Miller as a disciplined, results-oriented policy maker who aligns perfectly with Trump's vision. Detractors cite his controversial record and hardline ideological stance as red flags for someone in such a sensitive role.

Political analysts suggest that if appointed, Miller may steer the U.S. toward more aggressive and less cooperative foreign policies, potentially impacting relationships with NATO, the UN, and traditional allies.

 Conclusion

As President Trump reshapes his administration during his second term, the consideration of Stephen Miller as National Security Advisor reflects an effort to double down on America First principles. Whether this will lead to greater security or increased international friction remains to be seen
