FRIDAY TROPICAL & HEAT UPDATE
Heatwave Weekend Ahead: Enjoy the Sunshine (For Now) as Tropical Systems Stay Away
It looks more like August in the tropics today. Three systems across the Atlantic, but none threaten the U.S. over the next 7 days. Here's the bottom line on each.
DISTURBANCE #1 - Disorganized showers and storms are headed to the southern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Can't rule out a brief tropical system spinning up before it moves into Mexico on Sunday or Monday.
DISTURBANCE #2
- Low pressure is getting better organized and is highly likely to become a tropical depression (even a tropical storm) at any point today.
Models remain aggressive and indicate the possibility of it becoming a strong tropical storm or even a hurricane approaching the Lesser Antilles later Sunday or Monday.
High pressure to the north should keep it on a westerly track through the Caribbean Sea through next week. Upper-level winds will increase over the system late next week, so we'll see if it maintains intensity or weakens.
DISTURBANCE #3 - The odds that this system will become a tropical system are low. In fact, the models are not enthusiastic about development, but it's something we'll watch.
WEEKEND FORECAST—This weekend, expect more high heat, with heat index values well into the 100s.
The chance of storms is low on Saturday, followed by a better chance of storms on Sunday.
