Everything We Know About The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — The New Prequel Is in the Works

The Hunger Games universe is expanding once again with the upcoming prequel "Sunrise on the Reaping", based on the newly announced novel by Suzanne Collins. This new addition to the franchise promises to dive into the past of Haymitch Abernathy, offering fans a deeper look into one of the most iconic characters of the series.

A Return to Panem: What Is Sunrise on the Reaping About?

Sunrise on the Reaping will take readers — and eventually viewers — back to the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell, where a young Haymitch Abernathy rose to victory. Unlike the standard Games, this special edition featured 48 tributes instead of 24, making it one of the deadliest versions ever held.

The story is set 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s participation in the 74th Hunger Games, placing the focus on a darker, earlier version of Panem, and on the Capitol's efforts to control and manipulate the districts.

When Will the Movie Be Released?

Lionsgate has already confirmed a film adaptation of the new book. According to official sources, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping movie is scheduled to be released on November 20, 2026. The studio is once again teaming up with long-time producer Nina Jacobson and director Francis Lawrence, who has previously helmed several Hunger Games films.

While no official casting has been announced yet, fans are eagerly speculating on who will play the young Haymitch — a role originally portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original films.

Will Katniss or Snow Appear?

Since the story is set decades before the original trilogy, it's unlikely that Katniss Everdeen or President Snow will make an appearance. However, fans may get to see familiar names in their younger forms, and potentially explore the origins of certain political dynamics that led to the rebellion.

This prequel is expected to expand the world of Panem even further, adding depth to its history, characters, and complex social structure.

The Hunger Games Legacy Lives On

With millions of copies sold and a film franchise that grossed over $3 billion worldwide, The Hunger Games remains one of the most successful dystopian franchises in modern history. The upcoming book and movie aim to reignite the excitement while offering a new perspective on trauma, resistance, and survival.
