Reform UK’s Controversial Proposal
Labour leader Keir Starmer has strongly condemned Reform UK’s plan to revoke indefinite leave to remain (ILR) for migrants. Speaking at the Labour Party conference, Starmer described the policy as racist
and immoral
, warning that it would tear the country apart.
Starmer’s Defence of Migrant Communities
Starmer stressed that it is one thing to deport illegal migrants, but completely different to target lawful residents who have lived, worked, and contributed to British society for years. He said:
“They are our neighbours. They work in our economy. They are part of who we are. Removing them would rip this country apart.”
“A Racist and Immoral Policy”
When asked if the policy was racist, Starmer answered directly: I do think that it is a racist policy. I do think it is immoral. It needs to be called out for what it is.
However, he also clarified that not all Reform UK voters are racist, suggesting that many are simply frustrated with 14 years of Conservative failure and want faster political change.
European Far-Right Comparisons
Starmer compared Reform UK’s rhetoric to far-right movements in France and Germany, warning against importing divisive politics that fuel social conflict.
Political Implications
This debate highlights growing polarization in UK politics. Labour positions itself as the defender of inclusivity and fairness, while Reform UK appeals to voters seeking a tougher stance on immigration. With the next election approaching, immigration is set to remain one of the most defining and contentious issues in British politics.
